Studio is closed until 1st of October

Thank you to everyone who has made this summer at Glassification so busy. It has been fantastic meeting you all and I look forward to welcoming you back into the studio soon. I will be having a break from the 26th September until the 1st of October, so the studio will be closed. The Cafe and gallery are still open Thursday to Monday though, so you can still pop by for a coffee or to pick up a gift. You can reach me by email nikki@glassification.co.uk, but please bear with me as I might take a bit longer to get an answer to you.

See you in October

Glass Splashback finally installed!

Shard in Greens handmade fused glass, bespoke splashback

We reckon this glass splashback has taken the award for the longest time spent under a bed waiting for the kitchen to be completed! We made it in 2013, and this summer we received a lovely picture from our client with it finally in it’s place!

Looks lovely though, doesn’t it? I think our customer thinks it was worth waiting for.. 🙂

What a reaction!

Handmade bespoke glass splashback in turquoise, cream and silver

We are used to lovely reactions to our glass splashbacks when we install, but this week might have won the prize… a big fat smacker of a kiss!

Interestingly though, it wasn’t the only “reaction”, as that’s also what the splashbacks are.. the effects are all due to different glasses reacting both with each other and  the pure silver foil used (in the centre of the “wave” as well as a few “wisps”). Although you can pick up dark greens, browns and yellows, none of the colours were in fact used, but they have been created by the different minerals and metals in the different elements reacting with each other. This effect is both expected, and unpredictable at the same time, making it a choice for the brave or adventurous customer !

This design has been one of Liz’s favourites for a while, but it’s only this week that she has had a chance to create one for a customer.. so this week has been a good week!

New Workshop for Glassification

Millhouse - Glassification's workshop in Ilminster

Following our amazingly successful Crowdfunder Campaign where we raised 60% MORE than our target, we are now to be found in our awesome new workshops on the Rose Mills Industrial Estate, Hort Bridge Ilminster.

This is great news for us as it now means we are able to offer a full range of courses and workshops, as well as having a separate area well away from the dust of the workshop to display splashback samples and a range of art glass Liz designs and makes in between splashback commissions.

We are also able to hire out our kiln, cold working equipment  and workbench space to other glass artists subject to availability.

It will be a few more weeks before we are fully up and running and open generally to the public, but in the meantime, please feel free to contact us to make an appointment to view.

Glassification’s Crowdfunder Goes Live!

At 6pm on Tuesday 10th March, our crowd funding campaign went live.

What’s crowd funding? Well, in short it’s a way for social enterprises and businesses to raise funds, by offering rewards in return for pledges. Put very simplistically, it’s form of pre-selling.

Many micro businesses struggle to expand, being caught in a Catch 22 situation. You need to expand to increase turn over, and until you increase the turn over you can’t expand! With banks being careful, young micro businesses are having a tough time at the moment!

But, by turning to the crowd, there is a way out, and although it’s not for the faint hearted, it certainly offer a way through the problem!

Making large panels, and often having to make 3 at once requires space! As do flat bed kilns! And space has been very much at a premium for the last 2 years..  the Glassification workshop has often felt like one of those games, you know the tile game where you are trying to make up a picture, with one square missing, and you have to move one out of the way before you move another into it? Yeah. That. 🙂

And whilst we haven’t yet had a visit form Health and Safety, it was only a matter of time,…. working with glass and nasty chemicals in a confined space is not conducive to avoiding accidents! But finally, after months of looking, we have found the perfect space.

We’re staying in Ilminster, which is great because it’s such a lovely little town, so the move is less than 2 miles, but moving a workshop doesn’t come cheap! Nor does kitting it out so we also offer glass making workshops! So, with other funding options unavailable to us, we have gone to the crowd and asked for support from friends, family, other glass makers, and absolutely anyone who loves glass as much as we do.. (and that has to be EVERYONE right? 🙂 !)

And the response has been overwhelming! We are totally humbled by the amount of good will that is out there! Liz almost had a little toot at lunch time today, when some one told her she was an “inspirational woman” after watching the Crowdfunder video!

But also it could be because we are offering some truly juicy rewards in return for pledge…. (yeah, that just burst HER bubble!! 🙂

So, if you want to get involved too, and be rewarded by anything form an invite to the Opening Event, short glass making courses or a whole weekend, or discounted vouchers to redeem against any glass, splashbacks, art glass, courses, or workshop hire at any time in the future, then head on over to the Campaign Page and click on a link!

Unique splashbacks – unique kitchens!

Field of Flowers handmade glass splashback at Blakelands Country House

Our splashbacks adorn some lovely (and quirky!) kitchens.. today’s install was in a beautiful 17th century house near Stourbridge (which is apt, given Stourbridge’s connection with glass through it’s history!). Blakelands is used as a wedding venue.. so if you’re getting married, I can highly recommend it (and pop into the kitchen while you’re there!)

Blakelands Country House boats a beautiful garden, and the owner wanted to bring the naturalistic feel and some of her favourite plants into the kitchen.. so in came red and pink opium poppies, lavender, cow parsley, foxgloves, daisies, and cornflowers… but most importantly, forget-me-nots… in memory of her beloved sister.

I hope we did her proud.
